What to Do When You Run Out Of Ideas

by Rita Selle-Grider

For an inventor, coming up with an idea is one of the most important things. To run out of ideas is a very frustrating thing. It is like writers block for a writer. You can’t move forward because you do not know where to go. So, what do you do when you run out of ideas? Ideas are everywhere. You just have to know how to harness your ability to come up with new ideas.

Ideas are everywhere. Before you hit your idea block you probably saw ideas everywhere. Nothing has changed except your perception. Somewhere along the line you have lost your ability to see ideas. This might be a chance to just let it all in. You should expand your horizons. Instead of sticking to your usual boundaries you have to be willing to look in different directions. You can start by going online. Just explore and try to find out new things. Also do not let yourself fall into usual routines. You should start taking notes about everything, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Look at the world in a different way and ideas will start to come your way.

You also have to be open for anything. Serendipity is the idea of finding one thing when you were searching for another. You can put serendipity to work in your life to help you generate new ideas. Keep your eyes and mind open. Let your imagination soar. When faced with a situation do not go to normal, logically assumptions. You should explore every situation completely. Seek out unexplained mysteries. They can often help spark ideas. The whole idea of finding something you weren’t looking for is just a matter of life. It always seems that you get what you need when you are looking for it. The same can be true for ideas. Do not go hunting for ideas, but let them come to you. Another good way to generate ideas is to go back to childhood.

Once you start to grow up and your world expands beyond parents and your own home, you start to see the world differently. You begin to be taught rules about how to think and how to approach situations. Small children have no boundaries on their minds. They are free and unrestricted. They can think beyond logic because logic does not exist in their mind. Do not be afraid to play. Step out of your usual comfort zone. Go play at a park, run like the wind, catch snowflakes on your tongue, all of these things are childlike and they can cause you to think differently. Do not be afraid of being wrong. Just do what feels right. Be like a child and you will start to find ideas that were blocked off in your mind before.

Now, instead of coming up with own ideas, another way to generate them is by searching for problems. This van be done by observing your own daily living, interviewing people - the more the better, brainstorming, reading and searching for problems in the news, online, and in the scientific literature.

In the end you have to be persistent. Persistence is a great trait and one inventors need. You can not give up simply because you think you have run out of ideas. Ideas never end. People have been inventing since the beginning of time. Many inventors failed, but they kept trying and eventually created something great. You can not give up because times are tough. Take a break if you need to but do not quit. Try out all of the ideas above. You will get your ideas flowing again in no time and if you don’t, then just keep trying until you do.
